Simpson, eh?

Dante and I have a little ritual at the end of meals. When he decides he’s finished, he says, “All done all done all done all done all done!” Then I check in with him about the various items on his tray, picking up a piece of each one in turn.

ME: “Do you want any more chicken?”
DANTE: “Noooo.”
ME: “Do you want any more pasta?”
DANTE: “Noooo.”
ME: “Do you want any more salad?”
DANTE: “Noooo.”
ME: “Do you want any more rice?”
DANTE: “Noooo.”
ME: “Do you want any more milk?”
DANTE: “Noooo.”
ME: “Then you know what you are?”
DANTE: [Throwing his arms up in the air with a big grin] “All done!”

The reason this ritual evolved is that sometimes he really does want more, but doesn’t know it until he considers each food individually. In fact, sometimes I will ask about a food, he’ll say “noooo”, and then immediately pick up a piece of that food and eat it.

Laura doesn’t play this game with him, but an amusing side effect of our ritual is that now when he tells her that he’s all done, he will go on to say, “Do you want any more milk noooo,” picking up the milk and setting it back down again.

Last week, when he said, “All done all done all done all done!” I said, “All done, eh?”

His response: “All done B! All done C! All done D!”

  1. Ha, excellent. Has Dante started vocalizing the things he’s not supposed to do? My nephew has a habit of going up to plants and stroking their leaves while muttering, “Sam no touch plant. Sam no touch plant.”

    • Hee hee. Well, he doesn’t quite do that, but when I tell him not to do something, he’ll repeat it back to me several times in a row. “No coin in mouth. Coin out of mouth. No coin in mouth. No.”
